I’ve long thought that nothing is as self-referential as the World Wide Web. The phrase “world wide web” on Google garners 240 million hits. I would wager that of all things indexed on Google, there are likely few other topics so thoroughly covered as the Web: how to build websites, websites about the software used to build websites, websites that index websites, websites offering critiques of websites about websites, all spiraling out in an omphalocentric helix.
A close second to the World Wide Web for self-referential is food. The Financial Times has a great piece today by Simon Schama on food and writing about food.
